This part of the city owes its name to Sultan Ahmet I, who had the Blue Mosque built. Across it you’ll find the Haghia Sophia, with in between a marvelous assortment of gardens and fountains, commonly called the Sultanahmet Square (Sultanahmet Meydanı). Also in this area and under a two-minute walk are the Hippodrome and the Basilica Cistern.
Sultanahmet is the focal point of first time visitors to Istanbul. Many won’t even travel outside of Sultanahmet, simply because they run out of time. This is, although a pity, not a surprise with so many great top sightseeing venues concentrated in such a small area. Including countless restaurants, bars, shops and hotels.
